#TBT Throwback Thursday – Krystal Shenango China Coffee Cup

A delightful find this week makes me think of late nights and early college mornings at Clinton, NY’s Breakfast At Tiffany’s Diner (a.k.a. Tiff’s). It is a Shenango China coffee mug so sturdy it could probably be used to hammer a nail into some drywall and come out unscathed. It is likely from the 1940’s and has the logo of ‘The Krystal‘ chain of hamburger restaurants where they encourage you to “Take Along A Sack Full”. It is heavy and sits well in the hand(s) and the thick walls will keep that coffee warm for a good long time.

Nashville’s Music City Brew Tours

Yesterday the Junk Lady went with friends from a local networking group on a unique local Nashville tourist attraction: a visit to three local breweries on the Music City Brew Tours. There are over a dozen such breweries in the region and we didn’t find out until we were all on the short bus where we were headed first. Bennie Copeland and Marisa Scott were our guides and were very knowledgable about the history of beer in general, in Nashville specifically, and the processes of both making beer and its proper tasting.

Our first stop was Fat Bottom Brewing Company in East Nashville. We had a flight of four of their beers along with lunch. They have both indoor and outdoor seating and played a fantastic selection of songs by The Smiths and The Cure. I was in heaven. Of the four beers I tasted I enjoyed ‘Ida’, a Belgian-Style Golden Ale, the most.

Czann’s was our second stop. If you blink you will miss it driving by. Even if you don’t blink but don’t know where to look you will also miss it driving by. Sneaky.

They had three beers available for testing during our tour. The assistant brew master walked us through the process in the warehouse. Brewmaster Ken Rebman started like most as a hobby brewer crafting his beer at home in a basement and it escalated from there.

We took a chance and stopped by the not quite open Honky Tonk Brewing Company in Metro Center and they were still not quite open. It would have been neat to be the first tour through, even if we were crashers.

Our third tasting came at Black Abbey Brewing Company on Sidco near Thompson Lane. Here we tried a flight of four of their offerings. The darkest beer in the forefront of the photo was my favorite of the day: a robust coffee-infused porter named POTUS44. Junk Lady is more of a lager and ale gal so this came as a bit of a surprise.  Black Abbey’s beer are ‘Created, Not Made’ and are in the Belgian style.

Thank you Bennie and Marisa for a wonderful afternoon. I am looking forward to joining another one of your tours in the upcoming months.

Nashville Bills Backers At McNamara’s Irish Pub in Donelson

One thing I have learned in my wanderings literally around the world is that there are people from Buffalo, NY EVERYWHERE. Here in Nashville there is a haven for Western New Yorkers who are also fans of the NFL’s Buffalo Bills – the Nashville Bills Backers. That place is Donelson’s McNamara’s Irish Pub & Restaurant on game day for food, beverage, and a whole lot of hooting’ and hollering’. For food McNamara’s has their usual great Irish offerings, but they also have some off-menu WNY favorites like Beef on Weck, proper Buffalo Chicken Wings with bleu cheese, and a few cases of Labatt’s Blue beer. Last Sunday I tried their Irish Nachos: steak fries covered with cheddar, scallions, diced tomatoes, and Shepherd’s Pie meat – lovely!

I met up with our friend Jason Waldron of Absolute Refinishing in Lebanon and got to meet a Buffalo and Nashville legend, Mr. Pete Weber. Before relocating to Nashville and becoming the play by play voice of the Nashville Predators Mr. Weber did color commentating and post game interviews for the Bills as well as play by play for the Buffalo Sabres. (Both Mr. Weber and Mr. Waldron were sporting blue #12 Jim Kelly jerseys last Sunday to watch the Bills ‘squish the fish’, beating the Miami Dolphins handily – see photo.)

The Nashville Bills Backers just don’t meet for fellowship with like minded folk and good food, they also have raised thousands of dollars over the years for Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee.

SEC College Football Fall 10% Off Coupon

There is a little contention in the Junk Lady household each Fall. You see the gentleman I married neglected to ask if I had any SEC affiliations in my skeleton closet. I knew his alright; BAMA fans are rarely quiet. Imagine his surprise/shock/disgust when he discovered my Grandfather Vernon has graduated from Auburn. 😀

Press the ‘Play’ arrow on the above video to enjoy the last play of 2013’s Iron Bowl game. It never gets old.

This beauty of a relic was dropped off at a community recycling day in the City of Forest Hills here in Nashville last Spring. A lot like Fred Flintstone’s car, it has no power unless your feet get moving. It is the ‘Jogger’ Treadmaster by Vitamaster and there is a tread running belt over a series of rollers providing a surprising foot massage as one starts walking and then hitting a light jog.

Last Monday my daughter and I ventured to Silver Hill to go blackberry picking. We encountered a lovely quiet space and a GIGANTIC blackberry bush. According to owner and photographer Vincent Wallace, “Silver Hill is a place for Wild Blackberry picking, bonfires, photography and arts instruction, and the occasional fun event for the whole family, like ice cream socials, nature walks and the like!” Silver Hill is conveniently located in Franklin at 3916 E. McEwen Drive, Franklin, TN 37067 near the corner of Wilson Pike and E. McEwen Drive. Vincent can be reached at 615.275.9266. Keep up to date with announcements by joining the Silver Hill open Facebook group. Occasionally they need to close to allow for the berries to ripen. Join the group and check it out!

Throwback Thursday – Sears Coldspot Refrigerator

Who remembers the fantastic color selections for kitchen appliances a few decades back? We are sadly down to the monochromatic white, black and stainless these days, but there used to be ‘Avocado Green’, ‘Orange’, ‘Brown’, and ‘Harvest Gold’. A lovely example of a Sears Coldspot in Harvest Gold is presently at our warehouse. After both crews were done for the day we surrounded it like a campfire and spoke of appliances past. Good times. We have a couple non-profits looking for working fridges of a smaller stature and this fits both bills. Hopefully one will want to go back in time.

Cardboard can be recycled into more cardboard or it can be reused. I received a message a couple weeks back from a neighbor asking if we had any larger boxes she could use to build an airplane for their Summer vacation Bible school. Here is the end result. Thank you, Bethany Wagner for the update. I am sure your VBS will be a full, fun, and successful event. Vacation Bible School starts tonight, July 8th, at the Cane Ridge Free Will Baptist Church, located at 13984 Old Hickory Blvd in Nashville, 37013. Registration is at the door starting at 6:00PM and all are welcome. Class runs between 6:00PM and 8:15PM.

Fourth of July Wishes From Junk King of Nashville

One of our navigators shared this poignant photo with us earlier this week and I knew it was meant for our July 4th post. It shows DeWayne still in his Junk King shirt just home from work standing at the water’s edge holding his grandson’s hand. To me it embodies ‘Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness’.

Junk King of Nashville wishes you all a safe holiday spent with loved ones while enjoying this beautiful land of ours.
