#GivingTuesday is in its second year. It is a counterpoint to Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Taken from its website, “#GivingTuesday™ is a campaign to create a national day of giving at the start of the annual holiday season. It celebrates and encourages charitable activities that support non-profit organizations.” Two of our local non-profit partners are participating in #GivingTuesday: Safe Haven Family Shelter and Hands On Nashville.

Safe Haven has many ways to give this holiday season. They have wish lists already set up at Amazon and Target for needs at the shelter. Safe Haven is unique in the Nashville area in that it keeps families together instead of sending the older sons and fathers to the men’s shelters. Straight monetary donations are accepted in any amount. The Blessings With Bows program lets you “Make a donation to Safe Haven in honor of your clients, coworkers, friends and family. Donate $10 or more, and they will send the recipient an electronic card via email recognizing your donation in his or her name.” Funds are tight all over. Safe Haven asks to please consider their Christmas Cheer Campaign. Send a Christmas card to Safe Haven and they will deck the walls with positive messages from the community.

From 11:30am to 1:30pm the Hands On Nashville will be accepting used bikes for their ‘Recycle For Kids’ campaign to have the Oasis Center refub and donate this holiday season. Don’t have an unwanted bike hanging around? They are happy to accept a $10 donation which is what it costs to purchase a new and safe bike helmet. Their goal last year was 300 (of which Junk King donated 30). They made their goal and upped it to 500 this year. We will be dropping off the bikes we’ve been saving for this event since Summer.

Googling ‘Giving Tuesday’ and your city or using #GivingTuesday #Your City on Twitter should show multiple local opportunities to help. If not there should be local food bank and toy drives nearby.
