Original Elf on the Shelf –

It’s mid-week and Nashville is basically shut down. I know the Junk King trucks are not going anywhere. This Buffalo, NY transplant is loving the snow, the ice not so much. Though we are surrounded by ice, the sun has turned it into a wonderland. The little fellow pictured is a vintage Japan-made elf who found his way into our warehouse. My Facebook friends helped me name him: Swanson McShelfenhopper. That sweet, impish smile belies a devilish side that show itself from time to time.

Wacky Wednesday – Super Mario Nintendo Trophy

At Junk King of Nashville we get in a lot of old trophies. Large trophies, small trophies, broken trophies, trophies for martial arts, baseball, hockey, football, basketball, golf, bowling, and even a trophy for video gaming. This trophy was from October 12, 1990 and was for First Place at the Nintendo Championship.

How do we recycle these? We call Chris Markferding of Electric Buffalo – Vintage, Handmade & Redone Treasures. Like the Junk

Lady, Chris is a transplant here in Nashville from Buffalo, NY. Chris takes the toppers off the trophies and attaches them to a quality bottle stopper. Her stoppers give wine, olive oil, and vinegar bottles a sassy flair. Check out her Facebook page here or head on over to the Gaslamp Antique Mall (Booth W409) and see for yourself! This is Chris’s second appearance on heyjunklady.com. Here is the first!

Souvenir Dishes

Every now and again the Junk Lady comes across pieces of Americana that had been picked up on a road trip for a remembrance or a gift for a loved one.

One of my favorites is a candy dish from the Old Original Bookbinder’s in Philadelphia. Looks like the Old Original is now the ‘new’ Olde Bar, having been rejuvenated late last year.

Another favorite is a heart-shaped candy dish (or wall hanging) from the St. Louis Zoo. It has a painted gold rim with heart-shaped piercings around the edge – it is fancy! What souvenirs have you kept from your travels or from those of your parents?

Here is Junk Lady‘s Throwback Thursday blog post. Her friend John stopped by to visit and spied this beauty sitting in our metal recycling dumpster at work. It’s a vintage maple guillotine paper cutter made by Chicago’s Ideal School Supply Company. It is model Ingento #4. and though the blade is rusty and worn it is still sharp. Do you remember these from your school days?

It’s A Small World After All – Miniature Cottage, Berry Hill-Nashville

The Junk Lady was driving to one of her usual Berry Hill haunts, the Baja Burrito, when she decided to stop in at the Miniature Cottage she’d passed by so many times. It is located on East Iris Drive just off of Thompson Lane in Berry Hill. If you have a doll house or are thinking of assembling or furnishing a dollhouse you need to stop by.

The cottage is very small with a series of small rooms filled floor to ceiling with unique wooden doll houses, shadow boxes with vignettes of all different types of rooms, and more furniture and accessories than can be imagined. Miniature Cottage has been in business almost 40 years under owner Reneé Derra. It’s a small world after all!

Throwback Thursday: 1970’s Jukebox 45 RPM Records

1970s 45 Records: Shaun Cassidy, The Carpenters, Andy Kim, and The Captain & Tennile

1970s 45 Records: Shaun Cassidy, The Carpenters, Andy Kim, and Captain & Tennile

Today is Throwback Thursday and the Junk Lady found herself looking through some old vinyl records. 45 rpm records from the 1970’s to be exact. The Carpenters, Captain & Tennile, Shaun Cassidy, and Canadian Andy Kim’s ‘Rock Me Gently‘.

The yellow plastic 45 rpm adaptor has been known to confound more recent generations as to its purpose. It is to fit inside the 45’s larger opening so the record could be played on a regular 33 1/3 rpm turntable. The adaptors are still available and in a variety of colors.

Did you know that vinyl is alive and well and still being pressed into records right here in Nashville? United Record Pressing has the largest record pressing plant in North America and they are at capacity and almost done building their second Nashville plant.

Junk Lady was going though boxes and found one all chockablock with old clarinet parts. After attempting to assemble one working instrument and failing I got to thinking what non-musical way they could be recycled. CLARINET CANDLESTICKS!

Happy Halloween From Junk King of Nashville!

Junk King of Nashville hauls all sorts of items. It’s my job to get the items that still have life left to those who need them. Some of our ‘go-to’ places for donations are ThriftSmart, Safe Haven Family Shelter, and Youth Villages. If you are in the Nashville area and have a favorite non-profit that has a wish list of needed items, I’d be grateful if you sent along a message. It helps me keep space in our warehouse and the non-profits end up with needed items – win/win.

Last month a friend asked if by chance we had any clothing come off the truck that they might borrow for a Halloween costume before we sent the clothing along to donation. She said that four ladies at her workplace were trying to put together costumes to go as Blanche, Sophia, Dorothy, and Rose from the sitcom ‘The Golden Girls‘. We sure did and so glad to be asked. Thank you for being a friend, Rebecca!

SEC College Football Fall 10% Off Coupon

There is a little contention in the Junk Lady household each Fall. You see the gentleman I married neglected to ask if I had any SEC affiliations in my skeleton closet. I knew his alright; BAMA fans are rarely quiet. Imagine his surprise/shock/disgust when he discovered my Grandfather Vernon has graduated from Auburn. 😀

Press the ‘Play’ arrow on the above video to enjoy the last play of 2013’s Iron Bowl game. It never gets old.

As usual coupons and deals cannot be stacked. We’ll make sure you use the one that saves the most money. Whichever team(s) you follow and whether you watch in a man cave, woman cave, or garage we want your space to be clutter-free so you and your friends can really enjoy the game. Should the game end poorly and the TV somehow gets damaged we do recycle all of the televisions we pick up.
